Sloane

Sloane drew back the string of the bow, took a deep breath, like Ghlee had shown her, checked her aim again, and let go of the arrow. It landed next to the target, but at least she’d managed to shoot it the distance she was aiming for this time. She adjusted her tunic and belt before shifting her balance from one foot to the other before trying again. She didn’t want her legs to lock up.

She eyed the entrance again. Tolvar had still not come back, and it was well past midnight. The training yard was empty, but guards had left the torches lit for Sloane. Evidently, practicing well into the night wasn’t an unusual activity at Dara Keep. At least she didn’t feel as if she were being watched this time of night. Her lips tightened, Sloane redoubled her efforts to stop monitoring the entrance. She’d found Ghlee earlier, and he’d been completely unconcerned.

“The Wolf can take care of himself,” Ghlee had said with a shrug. Did he know where Tolvar had gone?

She’d offered a prayer to the sliver of moon in the sky for Tolvar’s safe return. Even if she didn’t particularly like him right now, she still didn’t want something to happen to him. Besides, she’d decided she must tell him about the Cibil of the Nay Moon. No more holding back, especially after what she’d overheard in the stable. She trusted no one else besides Tolvar, the only knight here not in the Order of Siria.

But, oh how she hated that she waited here.

What if the Befallen was close? Sloane’s wide eyes fixed on the entrance again.

What’s it to you when he returns? Thought the part of Sloane who still stung from Tolvar’s remarks.

He’s searching for a way to defeat the Befallen, same as me. I must tell him what I know, the other part returned.

That’s not it, though, Sloane conceded to herself. She didn’t want to lose one more person she knew. There were many broken parts to Sloane now, and she couldn’t consider how she’d piece herself together again if she did.

Without giving thought to her form, she nocked the next arrow and shot it. It landed in the bottom right corner of the target.

“Better.” Ghlee’s voice startled her, and she dropped the next arrow she’d plucked from the quiver next to her. “Sorry.”

He stood beside her, his focus on the target as if to prod her to shoot again. Sloane reformed her stance and missed the target.

“You’re thinking too much,” Ghlee said.

Another arrow shot; the target missed again. Sloane huffed out her frustration. This time, she didn’t think. She grabbed the next arrow and shot it into the lower right side of the target again.

Ghlee chuckled. “You’re consistent, I’ll say that. What are you doing out here at this hour?”

Sloane hoped it was too dark for Ghlee to see her blush. “Training, of course.”

Ghlee glanced at the entrance. Unlike earlier, his expression was pursed.

“You know where he went?”

Ghlee nodded, his jaw flexing as he kept his focus on the entrance.
